Here's a quick and easy pattern that is done entirely with single and double crochet stitches and is perfect as an accessory for your summer wardrobe. 

Whether you are headed to a farmer's market, the beach, or relaxing day at the park, this is the perfect bag to grab and run.  If none of these activities catch your interest, turn it into a crochet or knitting project bag.

Notes

  • All Instructions use US terms.
  • To make the base, you will be begin by working on both sides of the foundation chain, adding three additional stitches on each of edge.

Finished Size

10 x 12 inches (26 x 30 cm) Handles are 40 inches but feel free to make them longer or shorter as desired

Gauge

9 sts and 6 rows per 4 inches in pattern stitch.

Abbreviations

Ch - Chain

Sc - Single Crochet

Dc - Double Crochet

*  * -  Repeat the instructions between the asterisks for the number of times indicated.

Sl st - Slip Stitch

Rnd:  Round

Instructions

Ch 35.

Tote Bag Base

Rnd 1: Sc in second ch from hook. Sc in each hain until you reach the end of the row. Work 3 sc in the last stitch of the foundation chain. Then work sc into the other side of the foundation chain. Work 3 sc in last stitch, then sl st to join round. (76 sc stitches).

Rnd 2: Sc in each single crochet around. Sl st. Ch 1, Turn

Rnd 3 - 4: Sc in each single crochet round adding one stitch at the corner edge of round. (78 stitches, 80 stitches). Sl st. Ch 1, turn.

Rnd 5 - 6: Sc in each single crochet around adding two stitches at each corner (84, 88 sts). Sl st, Ch 1 and turn.

Rnd 7: Sc in each sc around increasing 3 stitches evenly spaced at each corner of the round (94, 100 sts.). Sl st. Ch 1 and turn.

Rnd 8: Work sc into the blo around round. Sl st. Ch 3 and turn.

Tote Bag Sides:

Rnd 9:  Dc in first sc.  * ch 1, dc in first ch sp,  repeat from * around  to last stitch.  Sl st into ch from previous round.  Ch. 2.

Rnd 10 - 24:  Repeat round 9.

Rnd: 25:  Hdc in each ch sp across round. Slip st, chain 2 and turn.

Rnd:  26: Repeat round 25.

Rnd 27 - 28:  Sc in each stitch around round.

Handles:

Handles are attached on either side of bag. If you end round 28 at one side, great, you are ready to add the handles. If not, fasten off and the re-attach yarn on the edges of the bag.

Single crochet in the top of 8 stitches from previous row. Ch 1 and Turn.

Row One: Sc in each stitch across. (7 sc). Ch 1 and turn.

Repeat row one until you reach your desired handle length.

Optional: Make a border of single crochet stitches on both sides of the handles and around the top of the tote bag. Fasten off and weave in ends.
