Crochet Market Bag: Beginner-Friendly Pattern with Ombre Yarn

Crochet Market Bag:  Linked Half Double Crochet Ombre Bag

This crochet project is beginner-friendly but does require the following skills:

• Red Heart Yarn Super Saver Ombre Baja Blue
• Hook:  Size I (5.5 mm) used for the main bag
• Hook size 4.5 mm for inside pockets (optional)
• Scissors
• Yarn Needle
• Stitch markers (to keep track of the beginning of the round)

Abbreviations

• Ch – Chain stitch
• Sl St – Slip Stitch
• St/sts.  Stitch/stitches
• Sc – single crochet
• LHDC – Linked half double crochet
• Rnd – Round
• Rep - Repeat
• * -- Work instructions within the asterisks for the number of times indicated.

Notes

• All instructions are written in U.S. Terms.
• The bag is worked in unjoined spiral rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.  Move the stitch marker after each round.
• If you make inside pockets for your bag, use a smaller hook but the same yarn.  All pockets are worked in single crochet stitches. 

Finished Size

Approximately 14 in wide x 15 inches tall (37 tall by 35 cm wide)

Gauge

Gauge is not essential for this project, but I am providing my gauge if you want to make a gauge swatch before beginning the project.

LHDC:  11 rows x 14 sts = 4 inches (10 cm)

Special Stitch Used in this Project:  Linked Half Double Crochet Stitch

1. The stitch is worked over two stitches.
2. The hook is inserted under the horizontal bar of the previous row.

To make the Lhdc: 

1. Insert the hook into the previous stitch's horizontal bar (middle bar, 3rd loop).
2. Yarn over and pull up a loop (two loops on hook)
3. Insert the hook into the top two loops of the next stitch.
4. Yarn over and pull up a loop. (3 loops on the hook.)
5. Yarn over and pull through all three loops.

Instructions

Base of Bag

Ch 4.  Sl st to first ch to make a small loop.

Round 1:  Ch 1. Make 6 sc into loop.  Add a stitch marker to last sc st.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sts.)

Rnd 3:  *Sc in next st. 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around. (18 sts)

Rnd 4: *Sc in each of the next 2 sts. 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around (24 sts.)

Rnd 5:  *Sc in each of the next 3 sts. 2 sc in next st. Pep from * around (30 sts.)

Rnd 6:  *Sc in each of the next 4 sts. 2 Sc in next st. Rep from * around (36 sts.)

Rnd 7:  *Sc in each of the next 5 sts. 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around (42 sts.)

Rnd 8:  *Sc in each of the next 6 sts. 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around (48 sts.)

Rnd 9:  *Sc in each of the next 7 sts. 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around (54 sts.)

Rnd 10:  *Sc in each of the next 8 sts. 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around (60 sts.)

Rnd 11:  *Sc in each of the next 9 sts. 2 sc in next st. Rep from *around (66 sts.)

Rnd 12:  *Sc in each of next 10 sts. 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around (72 sts.)

Rnd 13:  *Sc in each of the next 11 sts. 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around (78 sts.)

Body and Handles of Bag

Rnds 14 to 48:  LHDC around (78 sts.)

Rnd 49:  Make 21 LHDC, Ch 18, skip 18 sc from the previous round, make 21 LHDC, skip 18 sc.   Mark the end of the round with a stitch marker.

Rnd 50: Make one LHDC in each sc and chain around. (78 LHDC)

Rnd 51 – 57:  LHDC around (78 sts)

Rnd 58:  Sl st around to finish the bag.  Sl st into the first stitch and pull through to secure.  Weave in ends.

Inside Pocket(s) Optional

My pocket is approximately 5 inches wide by 4 inches tall, but feel free to make yours as deep or shallow as you prefer.

My pocket is approximately 5 x 4 in (13 x 10 cm).  Please make yours whatever size is needed.

With a 4.5 mm hook, ch 20.

Row 1:  Sc in the second ch from hook.  Sc across row.  (19 sts.) Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2 – 16:  Sc across row. If your pocket is as deep as you wish, fasten it off but leave a long tail of yarn for sewing the pocket to the inside of the bag. 

Attach the Pocket:

Determine where you want your pocket to be. 

Use pins to position your pocket and secure it. 

Using the long tail of yarn, sew your pocket to the inside of the bag, using a whipstitch on three sides. Weave in ends before fastening off.
