The Crochet Drunken Granny Stitch Table Runner Free Pattern by Janice Jones
The Drunken Granny Stitch is a unique variation of the traditional granny square stitch pattern. It is especially useful if you want a light and airy project that is fast and easy to learn.
You don't have to be drunk or a granny to do a project using this crochet stitch, but it helps to understand the double crochet stitch, the chain stitch, and how to make a slip knot and foundation chain.
Understanding written instructions is also a plus. However, once you get the idea, it quickly rattles off. This Drunken Granny Stitch Table Runner is an ideal project for this pattern.
The free pattern below is for a table runner but you can always alter it slightly to make a scarf, dishcloth, or placemat.
Easy
Ch: Chain
DC: Double crochet
RS: Right Side
WS: Wrong Side
Sp: space
Ch sp: Chain Space
These are the instructions for making the Drunken Granny Stitch. If you have never made this stitch pattern consider making a practice swatch before beginning your table runner.
For a practice swatch you will need to chain multiples of 5 plus 4. For this tutorial, I made a chain of 24 (5 x 4) plus 4.
Chain 24.
Row 1: (RS) *Make 3 double crochet stitches into the 5th chain from the hook; Chain 2; Make 1 double crochet into the same ch; skip 4 chains. Repeat t from * until there are 3 chains left. Skip the first two chains and make one double crochet into the last chain. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3. *Make 3 dc in first ch sp, ch 2, then make one more double crochet stitch into the same space. Repeat from * Until you reach the end of the row. Make one dc in the top of the chain 3. Turn
Rows 3 and beyond: Repeat Row 2
Once you are comfortable making the drunken granny stitch pattern, it's time to make your project, a table runner. This project works up fast and even with simple cotton yarn, the finished project looks fancy, yet classic.
Measure the length of the table you will want to cover with this table runner. Add about six to eight inches (15 to 20 cm) to that length. Work the instructions below, specifically row 2 to you reach this length.
Ch 34.
Turn
Row 3 and onward: Repeat row 2 until you reach your desired length. Fasten off. Weave in Ends, and Block.
The crochet drunken granny stitch is a versatile pattern that adds a twist to the traditional granny stitch. By following the step-by-step tutorial provided above, beginners and experienced crocheters alike can master this technique to create beautiful, textured pieces.
I hope you find this table runner to be a useful addition to your home. Since this stitch pattern is easy to learn, it makes sense that you can use this tutorial to create other very useful and creative projects including scarves, dishcloths, market bags, and placemats.
